On March 23, 2026, Citizens for the Advancement of Community Development (CACD) welcomed author, speaker, and community leader Felicia Murrell for a powerful and transformative Fireside Conversation titled “Beyond Division: Building Belonging and Repair in Our Communities.”
This special gathering emerged directly from CACD’s 2026 Black History Month Celebration, Echoes of Greatness: Celebrating Black Canadian Legacy, Arts, and Futures, and the reflections shared by community members through the Wall of Futures initiative. Through their messages, participants expressed a deep desire for stronger communities rooted in dignity, opportunity, connection, inclusion, and belonging. What became evident was that people were expressing more than hopes for the future—they were expressing a fundamental human need: the need to feel seen, heard, valued, and connected.
Guided by co-moderators Michael Lafleur and Dr. Camille Logan, the evening explored a central question:
“If belonging is what people are seeking, what is preventing it?”
Through thoughtful dialogue and reflection, participants examined the meaning of belonging, the barriers that divide communities, and the work of repair required to rebuild trust, strengthen relationships, and foster genuine human connection. Felicia Murrell challenged attendees to move beyond “either/or” thinking and embrace a more restorative “both/and” approach to leadership, community, and human relationships— one grounded in empathy, compassion, accountability, and shared responsibility.
The conversation explored themes including:
• Building belonging in an increasingly divided world
• Rebuilding trust and repairing relationships
• The transformative power of empathy and active listening
• Leadership rooted in dignity, compassion, and service
• Supporting youth and creating environments where they feel valued and empowered • Strengthening communities through dialogue, understanding, and collective action • Moving from isolation toward genuine connection and community
Participants reflected on the distinction between empathy and pity, the importance of listening to understand rather than listening to respond, and the role that ordinary acts of care and compassion play in creating communities where everyone can thrive. The discussion reinforced a powerful message: belonging is not simply an idea—it is a practice that must be intentionally cultivated through how we engage, listen, lead, and show up for one another.
More than a conversation, the Fireside Dialogue served as a call to action. It strengthened connections among community leaders, educators, faith leaders, youth advocates, and residents while laying the foundation for continued engagement around belonging, community healing, social cohesion, and youth development. The event reaffirmed CACD’s commitment to creating spaces where meaningful dialogue can inspire positive action and help build safer, stronger, and more inclusive communities.
The evening left participants with a simple yet profound truth:
“People are longing for belonging. Belonging requires repair. And repair begins with each of us.”
As part of CACD’s ongoing commitment to youth empowerment, leadership development, community engagement, and social cohesion, the themes and insights emerging from this Fireside Conversation continue to inform new programmes, partnerships, and community-building initiatives designed to move our collective aspirations from reflection to action and from vision to impact.
